A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I, along with some of our children, their spouses, and many of our grandchildren; gathered at my home to make apple butter--a tradition that goes back generations in many Virginia families. We made over 40 quarts from 3 bushels of Virginia grown apples! The process begins early in the morning and lasts most of the day. Use a copper kettle over an open fire, throw in a few pennies to help keep the stirrer and apples from sticking to the bottom and burning, and then enjoy the fruits of your labor on hot butter biscuits!
