SCV Virginia Division Helps Lee Chapel
The Virginia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans recently donated six replica flag staffs to the Lee Chapel and Museum of Lexington, Virginia. For decades, eight original battleflags and staffs were hung about the chamber which contains the famous recumbent statue of General Robert E. Lee. The Museum of the Confederacy laid claim to the flags in the 1990's and the original flags were sent to Richmond. The current flags are replicas which were donated by the UDC. The MOC recently requested that the original flag staffs be turned over to the museum as well. Brandon Dorsey, Past Virginia Division Commander, was made aware of the situation and requested that the Virginia Division cover the cost of creating period looking replicas. Daniel Young, a sutler and member of the Stuart-Hairston Camp #515, was chosen to make six of the replica staffs and finials. Two of the original staffs were field replacements made from a dogwood tree and a pine tree. The replicas of these two staffs were selected and cut by Mr. Dorsey.
