Best Book On Civil War Cavalry?

Knight of the Valley
by John Paul Strain

I'm asking readers to recommend some books to me. I'm involved in a project in which I need to learn more about cavalry and the Civil War. I'd like anyone and everyone to recommend their favorite book, best resource, etc. Yes, I could just Google, but I would appreciate some input from readers.

Thanks in advance.

I recommend the "Gettysburg Companion"

It has more than cavalry information in it, but it is a great book!

I do not know of any one book to recommend, but I remember seeing a number of hard-to-find cavalry related titles made available by a small reprint company out of Tennessee...

Some of these looked pretty good.

You really only need to know one thing about cavalry...

Victory goes to the one who "gets there the firstest with the mostest".

Rick: Here's some good Yankee primary accounts Stevenson's Boots and Saddles and Beach's First New York (Lincoln) Cavalry both tell of that famous regiment. Elwood's Stories of the Old Ringgold Cavalry and Farrar's 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry and the Ringgold Battlion tell about the exploits of the Ringgold Battalion. Hard's 8th Illinois Cavalry is also very good.On the Rebel side you might want to look at U.R. Brooka Butler and His Cavalry, the Memoirs of Col. John S. Mosby, and Gilmor's Four Years in the Saddle, von Borcke's Memoirs, Blackford's War Years with Jeb Stuart

13B - yes, already familiar with the exploits of General Forrest.

Steve - thanks, you've given me some options to explore.

Mr Willaims I am a fellow DIV'er and read your blog as much as i can... My direct Confederate ancestor served with Jeb Stuart and lost his leg around Mt Meridian in 1864... So i try to read as much as i can on anything pertaining to the Cavarly campaigns..One of the best books i have ever read is War Years with Stuart by W.W. Blackford it will keep you hooked from the first page to the last.

take care,
