For Those Practicing Presentism

(i.e., many Civil War bloggers and historians)

“A mistake constantly made by those who should know better is to judge people of the past by our standards rather than their own. The only way men or women can be judged is against the canvas of their own time.” ~ Louis L'Amour, Education of a Wandering Man

L'Amour's quote struck me as both obviously accurate and especially timely. Presentism in some ways is like racial profiling, they stem from similar erroneous presumptuous based on category or circumstance rather than on individual behavior.

I'm not satisfied with the correlation just yet. I'll work on it and have more to add later. Of course anyone is welcome to challenge the assertion or extend and refine it.

Agreed. Mosby said the same... "People must be judged by the standard of their own age."

Some things are so obvious, they are east to overlook.

Now that's an interesting observation, but I see the similarities as well.
