Today I received a notice in a Facebook feed showing a photo purported to have been taken inside Lee Chapel in 1910. Note that the image clearly shows a Confederate battle flag of some type displayed above the Recumbent Lee. (The image is apparently a negative and reversed.)
A number of Civil War historians have asserted that Confederate battle flags were not placed in Lee Chapel until the 1930's. This assertion, ostensibly, gave weight to the effort to remove the flags because they were not being displayed in a "historical" setting. I think that argument was weak at best, but this image could possibly prove that argument moot; though it won't make any difference now.
